Today in 1957: President Eisenhower invites Ghana’s Finance Minister, Komala Agbeli Gbdemah, to have breakfast with him at the White House. Eisenhower extends the unusual invitation amid embarrassment over race discrimination suffered by the foreign dignitary.
The Minister accepts the invitation. A Delaware restaurant, however, denies Finance Minister Gbdemah a glass of orange juice, saying (quote) “colored people are not allowed to eat here.”
