Today in 1983: Seventy people were arrested in Boston outside a hotel where a “New Trends in Missiles” trade conference was being held.

Inside the hotel, over 1,000 cockroaches were released to symbolize the likely survivors of nuclear war.

It’s Today’s Action Calendar!

Today is World Hoop Day Madison! This will start with a performance showcase of Madison’s best and brightest hoopers, followed by a hoop jam with local djs. World Hoop Day Madison is a fundraiser for hoop making materials for hoops that will be donated to the Boys and Girls club here in Madison, and at Cabrini Green in Chicago. Funds raised will also go to sponsor a Hoop Ambassador visiting another country to bring hoops abroad. There is a small donation requested. This is at Plan B, 924 Williamson Street, starting at 7 pm sharp. More info at worldhoopday.org.

Tonight, the public is invited to the forum ‘Progressive Voices in the Mainstream Media’ at the Basics Food Cooperative in Janesville. There will be a potluck at 6pm, with the presentation beginning at 6:30. John Sylvester, known as ‘Sly,’ will share his experiences as the veteran morning host on Madison’s WTDY radio, up until recently when he lost his job due to the decision by the station to change its format. This will be at the Basics Food Coop, 1711 Lodge Drive in Janesville. More info at rockcountyprogressives.org.

The YWCA Madison is dedicated to providing safe, affordable housing and shelter; education and training for finding, changing or maintaining a job; Racial and Restorative Justice programs to create a more inclusive community, and Girls Inc. to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.
