Today in 1975: The “Front for the Liberation of Mozambique” frees the nation from five hundred years of Portuguese rule. The new government aims to establish a socialist society and eliminate white minority regimes in southern Africa.
The country will provide a haven for Zimbabwean nationalist forces despite strong Southern Rhodesian military reprisals. For the next several years, the front will defend the nations independence against Jonas Savimbis terrorist forces, sponsored by South Africa and the United States.
