The November 15, 2012 episode of Perpetual Notion Machine featured science video games, both to learn science and to do science. We spoke with Kurt Squire, UW-Madison professor and director of the Center for Games, Learning, and Society about the video games his group has produced. Then, we found two science novices to try playing one of his group’s games to learn about virology. Finally, we talked to Firas Khatib, a research associate with the Baker laboratory at the University of Washington that has produced “Foldit”, a game where players attempt to model structures of real proteins.
