Filmmaker and lawyer Dawn Porter talks about Gideon’s Army, her new documentary about public defenders. In 1963, a Supreme Court case called Gideon v. Wainwright transformed the US criminal justice system, promising the right to a lawyer regardless of income.

From the Gideon’s Army website:

GIDEON’S ARMY follows the personal stories of Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander and June Hardwick, three young public defenders who are part of a small group of idealistic lawyers in the Deep South challenging the assumptions that drive a criminal justice system strained to the breaking point.

The film screens at the Wisconsin Film Festival, Thursday, April 11th, at 9:00pm in the Union South Marquee.
